Rural Municipality of Malpeque Bay

About the Rural Municipality of Malpeque Bay

Seven communities on the shores of one of Prince Edward Island's most treasured coastlines.

The Rural Municipality of Malpeque Bay sits on the north shore of Prince Edward Island, in Prince County, along the sheltered waters of Malpeque Bay. The area has been home to farming and fishing families for generations and is known around the world for Malpeque oysters. The municipality was incorporated in 1973 and today brings together seven communities: Baltic, Darnley, Hamilton, Indian River, Malpeque, Sea View, and Spring Valley.

The municipality is governed by a Council made up of a Chairperson and councillors elected by residents. Council meets monthly at Malpeque Hall, 2205 Route 20, and all residents are welcome to attend. The municipal office at Malpeque Hall handles day-to-day administration, property taxes, permits, and hall bookings.

Malpeque Bay itself is a unique coastal lagoon, sheltered by a 25-kilometre sandspit and recognized as a Wetland of International Importance for the birds and marine life it supports. The municipality is proud to maintain the lowest municipal tax rate on Prince Edward Island while caring for its roads, community halls, and emergency services.
